Winter meetings “Bah, Humbug”

After the signings of the winter meetings, we actually lost some ground. I don’t like how the front office cries broke when it comes to signing a starting pitcher, but then throws so much money at Brandon Lyon he would be a fool not to take it. I never wear rose colored glasses so I don’t see any improvements made to this team. Let’s take a look:

Feliz, who is basically a replacement for Tejada, has an average that hovers around .260. His power numbers have slid right along with Tejada’s the past two years. His defense is above average, so that gives him a slight edge and a special place in Alyson Footer’s heart. As far as back end relievers, you lose Valverde/Hawkins and replace them with Lyon/Lindstrom. I could never choose Lyon over Valverde…mainly because Valverde is a proven closer, and although he gives you the occasional cardiac arrest, he normally comes through in the end. Hawkins numbers were far superior to Lindstrom’s. Lindstrom missed 6 weeks due to elbow inflammation, but came back for Aug.-Sept. where he didn’t exactly overpower anyone. There you go…Matt Lindstrom is the risky pitcher this organization rolled the dice on. They really can’t help themselves, the temptation is too great for Wade the ego maniac. He’s already reading the headlines, “Ed Wade: Catching lightning in a bottle.” I say Wade needs to prepare himself for a disappointing season. First of all, Oswalt is certain to miss some time with his back or some other ailment. Secondly, Bud Norris is still learning the ropes and of course there is Moehler…who will continue to be Moehler with his +5 ERA and his anything but spectacular stuff. Last but not least, you have the #5 pitcher who if I were guessing would be Paulino or possibly Wright at this point. Wandy is the only one I feel fairly confident in right now.

With the addition of Feliz at 3rd base, I guess this makes Blum your 1.5 million dollar bench player. I like Mr. Clutch coming up to bat in the bottom of the ninth to win it, and I can’t think of anyone else I would want in that position.

Bottom line…this team is refusing to lock into any long term contracts, and that’s a good sign for the future. Not next year, but soon.

Blummers Back. Yankees win WS

I realized I haven’t written about Geoff coming back. What this means is the team isn’t confident enough with the new manager, so they need Geoff for backup. We have all seen his ability to make split second decisions while the actual manager is having day dreams about night things. I like Geoff, and I think he deserves some accolades.

I heard the Yankees won it all. Congratulations to Jane over there at “Confessions of a She-Fan.” I actually picked the Dodgers to win it all, but when the Dodgers blue it, I knew the Yankees had all the pieces in place to beat the Phillies, and I never doubted that. A-Rod will be kissing himself in the mirror a little more often now. Hopefully he shares himself with Kate. Let’s see…we have Kate, A-Rod, and the Man in the Mirror, it’s a threesome. It’s been my experience that someone always gets left out…in this case, sorry Kate.

Bottom line…you have to love yourself, before you can love others.

****************.500***************

Here we are, we finally hit that magical mark of .500 baseball. The goal has been accomplished. We can all pat ourselves on the back and go home, we did it. ~~Looks like we made it~~~ Frankly, I’m one of those fans who thought it was important but after hovering around the .500 mark for so long it became anti-climatic when it happened last night. I really want someone to answer my question about what happens if we lose tonight? We will be right back under .500. I seriously hope we don’t lose; I never want this team to lose, even if my fantasy championship depends on it. Wait a minute…how much $$ we talking here?

Blum was the hero last night. He went from being the goat, to bringing home the winning run. So what if the fans booed him the night before? That is baseball. They didn’t hold a grudge and boo him after he won the game did they? Hell no. I will question what Blum is doing out on the field nursing a hamstring injury. I was discussing this on twitter (my username is AGAME_) last night before he hit the game winner. You don’t try and push yourself through a hamstring injury. You could be put on the shelf for an extended period of time if you reinjure it, and you could cost your team in the game if you have to “let up.” A 75% Blum is not that appealing when you have healthy alternatives behind him. With that being said, I would absolutely dig him in a pinch hitters role, this guy knows how to hit when its clutch time. Awesome.

Good luck Astros….on keeping your head above the .500 waters.
