BACK TO *************.500***********

Weren’t we just here? I said “good luck” staying above the .500 waters and I wasn’t kidding. Now the Astros have another tough assignment ahead, but if this team can show me something against the Cardinals, I may be more optimistic. As it stands right now, we have been hovering around the .500 mark way too long. This team is what you’d call “lukewarm.” They are not hot and not cold, and definitely not “just right” (I’m sorry.) If Goldilocks were to skip over to test this team’s porridge she would spit it out, that’s all I’m saying. The 3rd game of this Cardinals series has Oswalt slated to butt heads with Carpenter and this should be a great pitching matchup. Carpenter has had one poor outing since he came off the DL in May, so get ready. Oswalt has been pitching great as well after another very slow start out of the gate this year. He was definitely lagging for the first couple of months, but that appears to be over.

Splitting with the Dodgers was “ok” but you wanted more after winning the game against Billingsley. This Dodgers team looks good because their rotation gets it done for them. It will be interesting to see what they get from Schmidt this time around. He has either been hurt or flat out ineffective for several years now. I know the rumors are swirling about the Dodgers getting Halladay, we’ll see, but that would push them from contender status to the favorite to win the WS.

What is our second baseman’s name? Oh yeah, Matsui. He has actually brought his average up from .215 to a paltry .255 in the month that he has been back from the DL. That’s right; he has been healthy for over a month. If he can stay healthy, he won’t annoy me quite as much. He still gets under my skin, but I can deal with it when he is actually contributing to this team (with his inflated contract.)

Bottom line….I’d like Maysonet to steal his job and make him like it.

If you’re going to San Francisco….

….please take me with you.

I love San Francisco….not just because I was married there in 2004 when this picture was taken, but the city itself is awesome. The Bay Area in general is one of my favorite places to visit. Ok, on to baseball. Thanks to Roy we came away with one win during our three game set against the SF Giants. The Wizard is on a roll with three quality starts. He had a complete game against the Pads, and his line last night looked like this: 8IP 1ER 6K. Nice. If we can get Roy and Wandy on the same page and cut the ”I’ll be hot, when you’re not” who knows, we could make it to .500 baseball. It could happen. My question is this, if you get to .500 and then you lose the next two what did you really accomplish?

It is great news that Hunter Pence made it to the All Star Game. I am willing to bet that he warmed some hearts with his “tipping of the cap” gesture after he crashed and burned along the 1st baseline. That was awesome…the guy cracks me up. Someone mentioned that he shouldn’t go all out that close to the stands, he could tear up his knees for Christ’s sake. Is it possible for Hunter Pence to “let up?” I don’t think so. That’s not “Hunter Ball.”

Bring on Pitt, we are missing Zach Duke once again, so the Astros really need to take care of business.

Did that just happen?

What the hell is going on? A complete game from an Astros pitcher, damnation. Cooper said there was not even a question of taking him out in the 9th. I would bet he was sweating it, he loves trotting out to the mound, putting a lasso around the starting pitchers, then dragging them back to the barn. I’m telling ya he’s a control freak, that’s right it takes one to know one. ;)

So we’re headed for a 6 man rotation. This is the best route at this juncture. I’m simply guessing at who will be demoted from the rotation after the All Star Break, but I would go with Moehler or Hampton. And that all depends on what they do until then. I don’t think anyone knows what is going to happen right now, so let the contest begin.

I wanted to say right now that I can’t get excited over High School kids like Mier, ok? Am I the only one? They are so raw physically and mentally that there is no way of knowing what you will end up with in 3-4 years. It’s tough enough to know what you are going to get from players coming out of college, but High School? I don’t like this part of baseball, the drafting of teenagers, then shipping them off to Farm School to grow up.

I’m OUTTA here!

Not yet, but tomorrow morning I will be. We’ll be flying in to meet the outlaws (they’re really the in-laws, but I prefer outlaws) for tomorrow’s game at Minute Maid. Before gametime, we’ll be skipping over to the FiveSeven Grille. If you call and get reservations before hand, you are guaranteed the promotion for that day. Our reservations are at 3:30pm, so that will give Tracy plenty of time to take pictures afterwards. HA! I wonder if you could just grab your blankey and run? ;) Seriously, I’ll be sure and buy some overpriced food. It’s worth it to bypass the long line. At stake, are MMP’s 10th season stadium blankets. We’ll be sitting in section 127.

I’m going to try the Killer Bee Mojito (I think that’s what it’s called.) I love mojitos, and make them at home myself. It’s a low calorie alcoholic drink that’s popularity cranks up with the temperature. You have to be careful to “muddle” the mint with the lime and the simple syrup, not crush it. Crushed mint leaves cause serious problems when you’re trying to drink it. We’ll see how they do. I catch myself watching the bartenders to make sure they’re being gentle with the mint. ;) I’m lightly joking here, but my wife will say I’m serious.

The Astros will be throwing the Wand out there tomorrow, and he’ll be going up against Harang who thus far, has had some good stuff. He gave up one earned run against the Mets and lost, and his one win against Pitt, he struck out nine and gave up zero runs. He hasn’t had a lot of success against the ‘stros, so I hope that continues. I hope Wandy continues to do well at MMP, and the bats stay hot.

A side note: I would really like to see Oswalt look like an ace again; it will be interesting to see how he pitches tonight.
