Cut Coop loose/Paulino can stay

This countdown is agonizing. Day after day after day…I check Astros.com looking for the headline “Coop is canned.” I feel dejected, but move on with the hope that tomorrow is another day and possibly that day could be the one where he gets “rung up.” I’m not sure what else you need to do wrong as a manager to be terminated. Not show up for a game? Take a nap in the dugout? (trust me he’s done that, ask Blum.) I will admit he’s a great prognosticator. His prediction of 90 wins can still happen if the team can somehow pull off a 27-2 record to close out the season. It could happen. O.k., no way in hell.

Paulino looked good yesterday. It was almost a carbon copy of his performance against the Rockies back in June where he his stat line looked like this: 6.0 IN 5H 2ER 1BB 7K. Compare that to yesterday’s stat line: 6.0 IN 4H 2ER 2BB 7K. Not bad Paulino. His best start was against the Tigers in June where he posted 7.0 IN 3H 1ER 0BB 9K. Awesome. I think we’re at place now that this team can keep him in the rotation, and he can work through some of the issues that had him yanked earlier. He has shown flashes of brilliance, and with some fine tuning, he’ll be ready for next year.

Hampton has been excused from his pitching duties for the remainder of the season and now has opted for multiple surgeries (pitching shoulder and both knees.) This is even too much action for an old Bulldog like Hampton. My prediction: He won’t pitch in Houston again, and I doubt he’ll even make it back to the show.

Bud Norris toes the rubber once again on Sunday. He’s had some extra rest so we shall see what kind of game the youngster brings. He keeps it interesting, doesn’t he?

Am I the only one that thinks of dentistry when I hear the name Moehler? The potential 5th starter for ’10 was let down by his defense on Tuesday. He’s won only one game since July 20th, and honestly, I’m not impressed. I do feel o.k. with him as a 5th starter next year, but he isn’t #5 now is he?

Things do not get any easier on Friday. We have the newest addition to the Phillies, Cliff Lee, coming to town and he’s had a fantastic season. He’s 12-10 but most of that has been with the lowly Indians. I have bad news though, he had his stink game last time out (6 ER) so the chances he’ll have two stink bombs in a row are slim. Do you know how many runs he normally gives up? Since July 16th (other than his last stinker) he has basically given up one run or less. Wandy better be on top of his game.

Mayo- Drop kicked

I was making my rounds this morning and came across this from Fanball.com:

Our View: Maysonet had opened hot at the plate after starting games at second base with Kazuo Matsui on the DL but has cooled of late.

Really. He’s cooled of late? How exactly do you stay hot when you sit on the bench day after day? I’d say the writing was on the wall for Mayo. After being treated like a red headed stepchild, Mayo was sent down to Round Rock. He did everything that was asked of him and more, but that wasn’t enough for this clueless manager. He wanted to showcase the switch hitting Kata and I can only guess that it could be as possible trade bait. If so, good luck with that. I think my request for extra Mayo didn’t make it to the mgrs desk. I get it, this isn’t Burger King, I don’t get it my way. I don’t think Burger King uses that slogan anymore, but there is nothing wrong with a little blast from the past. Now they have done a parody on a popular song and it goes something like this ”I like square butts and I cannot lie.”  Do what? Interesting advertising for the kiddos BG.

Backe…”he gone” and it was time. After possibly rushing himself back from Tommy John surgery, he did good in September of 2007. His numbers were poor in 2008 and this year they weren’t any better. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery like Nieve? Please don’t let this be another Nieve story. Is the scenery that bad in Houston? I don’t think so, and he’s from Galveston for christ’s sake.

Paulino had another great outing and struck out 9 in his first start coming back from the DL. I’m thinking the kid may be here to stay. Greg Lucas mentioned that we have 6 able bodies to pitch now, but I wouldn’t go that far….maybe 3 1/2. The Astros are 2 games under .500. and I keep wondering when they will make it there. They are winning again and Lance is heating up, the two go hand in hand.

It’s DARK in the cellar

Cellar.jpg

When I was a little tike, we were always traveling to Oklahoma to visit relatives. This was back in the 70′s when we didn’t have the technology we do now. They issued a tornado warning and that was it. No radar screens to look at, and definitely no Weather Channel. I remember the entire family cramming in the cellar when one was issued. This wasn’t fun. It’s dark, it smells, and I think there was something crawling on me a couple of times. I would really like to get out the cellar soon. Come on Astros, let’s get out of there.

Paulino could possibly be headed to the DL with a strained groin. He was making some serious strides, but now the injury bug has bit him too. I have a theory, and it has to do with Matsui. If you get rid of Matsui, maybe the injury bug isn’t as severe. He could be spreading it around like the flu. I say we sever ties with him now. I know it’s going to cost $5 million dollars to dump him, and that is serious business, but Drayton dumped $6.5 million when he got rid of Woody Williams. We can put Mayo in there at 2B or Kepp, either one can do the job and I’m thinking without the butt, back and hamstring problems.

Bottom line….just put Matsui out of my misery.

Tejas lovin’ Tejada

He did it. Mr ‘Roids hammered one out to win the game last night. I know some of us weren’t awake for this, and that’s o.k. ya bunch of pansies. ;)

I’ll come right out and say it. I’m not a big fan of Miguel Tejada. I like players who play by the rules, who are upfront and honest, and who don’t come across as pretentious. I’m sure there are plenty of pretentious players on the Astros right now; I just don’t know who they are. If you happen to know who the pretentious players are, please let me know so I can write them off like bad debt. Thanks. I hope I won’t be writing off the entire team. Please tell me Pence isn’t one of them. He does have a hottie for a girlfriend, so could he be? Nahh….

Paulino looked impressive. He was moving that ball around like nobody’s bizness, and even made a few players look foolish, especially Seth Smith. He leaned back like the pitch was going to land inside, and that baby dropped right in the middle of the plate. Nice pitch.

You know, I really hate extra inning games with the Astros at night. Is it just me, or does it feel like we’re going to be up a while? Every time I feel that way. I would feel better about it if they had a lot of walk off wins, but it seems to go the other way. Then the next day, when the sleep deprivation kicks in, you realize it wasn’t for a good cause. It wasn’t like you were up all night having sex……now that is something that’ll get you through the day.

Rock the Juice Box

This title reminds me of the commercial where the two guys decide the words to “Rock the Casbah” are “Rock the Catbox.” Nice. Now if I only knew the real words to the rest of the chorus, I could sing along.

Wow, what a game to see in person. Of course, they can’t win every time we’re there I have come to realize. I am surprised that there have been two **** floaters at both games in Houston, and one in Kissimmee. I try not to complain about rain. I love it, but I do find it odd that you won’t find any umbrellas for sell around MMP. I know you won’t get rained on during the game, but it would have been nice to have for once you stepped outside the building. Is this asking too much for us travelers? You won’t see them for sell at Osceola stadium either. I don’t get it. Get some umbrellas out there, put your logo on it, and of course….stick your inflated prices on them.

That was one hell of a collision at home plate. You could hear it up in the stands, and the cheers quickly turned to looks of concern once we realized the players weren’t getting up. I personally like the play at the plate. ::shrug:: Of course, I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but I like it and it may be my love of football (a contact sport) coming through I’m not sure.

I was reading a comment from a fan complaining about the frozen margarita/sangria swirl at Minute Maid Park. It seems when you put the small, boring plastic cup contents into the taller (stretched out) more expensive one, they have the same amount of frozen concoction. GASP! Interesting, but I don’t care about that. My point? I know that those cute lil swirly things are practically still frozen by the 7th inning, and what does that mean? A lack of liquor. When you have a healthy dose of liquor, it melts the ice. Once again, the buzz has taken precedence over all else for me. ;)

Our stay at J.W. Marriott was great. We had a corner suite, and it was directly across from “Women’s Paradise.” This is what the taxi driver called it, and he’s lucky I tipped him after that. ;) Seriously, she was too busy to do much shopping, so THERE. I even walked over to the Galleria, ate at the Cheesecake Factory with my cousin, then had some drinks at the Fox Sports Grill. The bartender there knew how to whip up those drinks. How about a snakebite? This intriqued me enough to ask what it was. You pour Ace Cider into a mug about halfway, then finish it off with Guiness and it floats on top. How does it taste? I couldn’t tell ya. ;) I recommend drinking there, but I had the grilled cajun chicken sandwich and was not impressed.

Here are some pictures from the game:

Paulino didn’t look so good, and Gallardo pitched a complete game and was sitting in the rocking chair for most of the game. The ‘stros certainly didn’t make him work hard. Carlos Lee on the other hand, IS ON FIRE and is excluded from the previous statement.
