It is ON

First of all I would like to thank Alyson Footer the Senior Director of Social Media for the Houston Astros (former MLB beat writer.) I asked for her help in getting a jersey autographed by Hunter Pence. Obviously I wouldn’t ask for her assistance under normal circumstances, but this was for my sister-in-law who is still recovering from a brain injury and I didn’t want to go back home without it. She did not hesitate on helping me get it done. I’ve thanked her many times already, so what’s one more?

I recently returned from Spring Training in Kissimmee on Tuesday. We caught the Yankees game first. I don’t want to generalize here, but there are some very obnoxious Yankees fans. I am not talking about Jane over at Confessions of a She Fan either. I was walking around with a beer and I had more than one Yankees fan ask if I worked there. I guess if you have the audacity to wear any thing other than Yankees apparel you must be an employee. Grrrr….;)

I sorted through about 500 pictures that were mainly taken by my wife. I wasn’t surprised when I came across about 100 pics of birds and ducks. That’s my wife. B-) I could upload some pics of the game, but I don’t want to. ;) I do have one picture I worked on last night that I would like to share:

Yes, Carlos Slacker is my new whipping boy this year. I can’t believe Susan over at AstrosFanInExile knew I photo shopped this. ;)  I will admit that my wife helped me, but I definitely had some fun doing it. It’s perfect. We all know it’s the norm for him to get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double…don’t even get me started on his sluggish runs to 1st base (it really must be a chore.) He was even heckled by Astros fans at the Cardinals game because he couldn’t quite make it to the dugout so he plopped his butt down with the pitchers in the bull pen. That’s Carlos Slacker. ;)

Not only did I get to meet Alyson, but I met Susan for the first time as well. We have been emailing, tweeting, etc. for over a year now. I also met Susan’s sister Elizabeth.  They prepared dinner for us on Friday night, and I must say thanks to both of them. It was very good. We even stayed up past my bedtime. Here’s a picture of Susan (left) and Alyson at the game Monday.

On Monday after the Cards game, we went to Universal Studios City Walk. I really dig this place. Pat O’Briens, Margaritaville, and the Hard Rock Cafe (the largest in the world.) I drank a couple of hurricanes at Pat’s and took the last one to go. Now you’re talking my language…drinks TO GO. It doesn’t get any better than that. It actually made the trips inside the shops more tolerable. The City Walk will be a priority from here on out. Speaking of priorities, so will be staying along Interstate 4. Highway 192 is a pain in the ***…not only do you have umpteen million traffic lights, but if you get caught on the red side of one be prepared to wait a long time.

Bottom line…and this is important, I hate the Orlando Airport. The stress level is off the charts.

GET A LITTLE KISS

First things first. Why didn’t someone tell me about the chaos that is the Orlando Int’l Airport? On the weekend? Yikes. Somebody shoot me. People and lots of kids everywhere. Yes I know. Disney. Enough said. This place was unreal. I am fast forwarding to next year, and I will be doing things differently. The lines for the rental cars were snaking around, so I was so glad that we were staying at the Hyatt that night (which happens to be in this airport/mall.) Staying at this place was both convenient and chaotic. Obviously, it was nice to avoid the pressure of getting to and from the airport. On the other hand there is the craziness that unfolds once you step away from the elevators at the Hyatt.  As soon as you walk around the other side of the elevators you see lines of people on each side trying to get through security. In retrospect, the jury is still out on recommending this Hyatt. With that being said, the facilities were very nice.

On to the trip to KISS. I sure love having a GPS. This takes away a lot of the stress that comes with driving in an unfamiliar area. You add some rain to the mix, and that makes me love the device even more.
Once we arrived at the stadium it started to let up. IT’S
GAME TIME. We sat next to some Canadians who had come down to watch the only team they have there. They were very friendly people, they even let us use their towels to wipe down the rain off our seats. This guy asks me who our star player was. I automatically said “Berkman.” He didn’t understand me at first, so I repeated it. ;) Then he asked what position he played, and I said 1st base. Well, low and behold who trots out to play first base??? Not Berkman. Once I saw this, I turned to the guy and said, “Well, you never know who is going to play in Spring Training.” No offense to Darin, but what a buzzkill this was. The star player wasn’t playing. I gave him a back up just in case. “Carlos Lee is next in line.” I read later on Alyson’s blog that Berkman’s shoulder was bothering him. Now, I’m hearing that he’ll be fine. We’ll see.  It was nice to see Pudge behind the plate.
Thumbnail image for Pudge.jpg He doesn’t have the skills he had when he was a young buck with the Rangers, but he is an upgrade at the catcher position here. Most definitely. Not a lot of action until Mr. Double Mint hit a dinger. Then, there was the unfortunate situation of having the bases loaded and nobody out in the 6th inning, but no one could deliver. That was frustrating. Pudge was the last one up to come away with nothing.  Lee was galloping around out there and even managed a hit. This Romero for the Blue Jays had some good stuff today, but it wasn’t this dog’s day. I was hoping the Astros would get another chance to show us something after that dismal display in the 6th inning and they did. Pence came through with an RBI that tied it up in the 7th and Louuuuu Santangelo tattooed one in the bottom of the 8th to put us up for good. What? It’s premature for the Looouuu call? ;) Here are a couple of pics of the stars of the game. Here is Pence with a sweet swing.

                                                 Here is the Looouuuuu…….

Winning Spring Training games DOES matter (if you’re there watching.)  I also must thank my lovely wife for taking the pictures, and then resizing them.

Forgettable

Roy’s performance in the WBC vs. Japan? Forgettable. It was looking like Pearl Harbor out there Roy. Let’s move on, and get you back to Kissimmee where we’ll forget all about it. I certainly hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. Another sloppy start in store for the Wizard this year? Yikes. He had that “apologetic” look on his face as he was getting pummeled. So the Japan team is on their way to another WBC finals with a chance to win it again. I guess they really dig this WBC thing. Yep, I’m back in the “don’t care about the WBC” mode. Although I must admit, I’d rather watch some of the WBC games than the messy Spring Training games that are filled with errors and no names that won’t be on the roster once the real games begin. Those no names come sliding in for the later innings too, just to give you an extra chance of losing. One more reason not to be too concerned with your ST record (unless you’ve lost like 16, that’s just crazy.)

I’ll be flying in to Orlando on Saturday and I’ll be watching the game on Sunday. I’m not sure how the rotation will shake out by then, but with all due respect, I hope it isn’t Wandy on the mound. That is the only guy I’m not interested in seeing pitch. Sorry. With that being said, I’m sure it will be him on the mound. ;) Of course, I hope his fingernail gets better real soon. YES, I know that can be painful.

Spring Training and the Media

It has been reported that the Astros players were not affected by this losing streak, only Coop. I find it hard to believe that these players weren’t relieved to have finally won a game. Is it just me that finds this puzzling? I know of the angst that many fans were feeling, but not the players? C’mon. I don’t believe everything that is reported by the media in regards to this team (or any team for that matter.) It doesn’t necessarily have to do with the truthfulness of the reporters, but with what the organization (front office, mgt, players) wants the public to know. I believe the organization misleads the public and obviously uses the media as their outlet. They deny reports, rumors, etc., about certain players, when I know there is some truth to it. Of course, my main problem with the media is they can take snippets of articles, interviews and twist it to mean something else. This is what happened to a certain MLB reporter just recently, which I’m sure some of you have read about. Can you believe they even do it to each other? That just ain’t right. ;)
